Hydrocephalus:

The collection of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) in the hollow areas within the brain is known as hydrocephalus. The hollow areas are known as ventricles. The accumulation of CSF in the brain might cause pressure. Hydrocephalus (hi-drop-SEF-eh-less) treatments may typically reduce the quantity of CSF produced. An imbalance between the amount of cerebrospinal fluid generated and the amount absorbed into the circulation causes hydrocephalus. Cerebrospinal fluid is generated by the tissues that line the brain’s ventricles.

Ventriculoperitoneal Shunt:

The insertion of a VP shunt is usually done while the patient is under general anesthesia. During the procedure, you will be sleeping and not feel any discomfort. It takes roughly 90 minutes to complete the process. Preoperative food and drink limits should be discussed with Dr. Ammar Anwer.

Procedure:

Adults and older children may need to fast for at least eight hours before surgery. Infants and toddlers may only need to cease eating solid meals and baby formula six hours before surgery, but they may generally drink water until four hours before the operation. These guidelines should always be discussed with your surgical team.

Complications:

  • Changes in appearance
  • Downward transtentorial herniation
  • Chronic papilledema.
  • The third ventricle dilated.
  • Dysfunction of the brain
  • Incontinence
  • Changes in gait

Recovery Time:

It takes three to four days to recover from a VP shunt implantation. Most patients can leave the hospital within seven days after the treatment. During your stay in the hospital, your heart rate and blood pressure will be monitored, and Dr. Ammar Anwer will prescribe antibiotics to keep you healthy.
